One of the questions we hear all the time is,
"What should I accomplish during my first year?"
That's actually a much better question than, "How much money should I make?"
Because if you focus on doing the right things, the financial side usually takes care of itself. If you only focus on the money, it's amazing how often people skip the things that actually create it.
We don't judge first-year success by revenue. We judge it by momentum. Did you become licensed? Did you gain confidence? Did you start building relationships? Did people begin remembering your name? That's a much healthier way to measure the first year.
Some franchise owners launch quickly. Others are balancing another job, family responsibilities, or state licensing requirements. Some markets move faster than others. Some people are naturally comfortable walking into a real estate office. Others need practice.
That's okay. This isn't a race. It's a business.
Complete any required licensing. Finish your education. Learn the inspection software. Perform practice inspections. Become comfortable writing reports.
Learn how to explain defects without sounding like the sky is falling. Practice walkthroughs. Practice answering customer questions. Learn how to communicate calmly.
Launch your website. Set up your Google Business Profile. Create local content. Order marketing materials. Build a professional online presence.
Visit real estate offices. Schedule coffee meetings. Introduce yourself. Become a familiar face. Listen more than you talk.
Every inspection teaches you something. Every report gets a little better. Every walkthrough becomes more natural. Every client helps build your reputation.
Consistency beats intensity. A little marketing every week usually beats one giant marketing push followed by three months of silence.
People stop doing the things that created their early success.
They stop visiting offices. They stop asking for reviews. They stop following up. They stop improving reports. They stop using the marketing pieces.
Eventually... they become order takers instead of business owners.
We've seen it more than once. And it's almost never because the system stopped working. It's because the owner slowly stopped working the system.
Perfection.
Nobody has a perfect first year. We certainly didn't.
You'll make mistakes. You'll have awkward conversations. You'll wish you had explained something differently. You'll think of the perfect answer while driving home. Congratulations. You're officially becoming an experienced inspector.
One advantage of buying a franchise isn't avoiding work. It's avoiding unnecessary mistakes.
We've already built inspection companies. Sold them. Started over. Built them again. Improved them. Sold them again. Refined the systems. Changed the marketing. Improved the reports. Adjusted the customer experience. Built better websites. Created better presentations. Developed better processes.
You don't have to start where we started. You get to start where we finished.
If someone asked us what success looks like after the first year... it wouldn't be a revenue number.
It would be this.
You know how to inspect. People trust you. Agents remember you. Your reports are solid. Your confidence has grown. Your marketing has become a habit. And you've built a business that's getting stronger every month because you're still doing the things that got you there.
