I Hate Sales
Good.
Honestly, so do I.
When most people hear the word "sales," they picture someone trying to convince another person to buy something they don't really need.
That's not what we do.
And if it were, I probably wouldn't enjoy this business either.
We're Not Selling. We're Explaining.
People can't make a good decision if they don't understand their options.
When someone calls for a home inspection, our job isn't to pressure them into buying more services.
Our job is to explain what's available, why someone might choose it, and what they can learn from it.
Then we let them decide.
That's not sales.
That's education.
An Example
Suppose someone calls about a home inspection.
An order taker says...
"Okay. That'll be $495."
Conversation over.
We teach something different.
We explain that many buyers also choose services like radon testing, sewer scope inspections, mold testing, pool inspections, or WDO inspections depending on the property.
Not because we want a bigger invoice.
Because every one of those services answers questions a standard home inspection can't.
If they understand the value and decide it's worth it... Great.
If they decide not to... That's okay too.
The Bigger Mistake
The biggest mistake isn't recommending too many services.
The biggest mistake is never mentioning them at all.
Think about it.
If a buyer finds out after closing that a sewer scope could have identified a collapsed sewer line...
...or that mold testing could have answered concerns about indoor air quality...
...they'll never say,
"I'm glad nobody told me."
People deserve to know their options.
Then they can make an informed decision.
Coffee Meetings Aren't Sales Calls Either
The same philosophy applies when meeting with Realtors.
We're not trying to convince someone we're amazing.
We're helping them understand how our inspection process makes their clients feel more comfortable, more informed, and less overwhelmed.
There's a big difference.
Nobody enjoys being sold to.
Most people appreciate learning something useful.
The Hard Truth
If you're hoping to build a business without talking to people...
This probably isn't for you.
You'll need to meet Realtors.
You'll answer phone calls.
You'll explain your services.
You'll ask for business.
That's part of owning any business.
The good news is you don't have to become someone you're not.
You don't need a slick pitch.
You don't need pressure tactics.
You just need to explain value honestly.
How Our System Helps
This is exactly why we've developed phone scripts, coffee meeting presentations, marketing materials, pricing guides, and coaching.
We don't want owners memorizing a sales pitch.
We want them to become comfortable explaining why our inspection experience is different.
That confidence comes from practice.
Not personality.
One Last Thought
Here's a question I ask franchise owners.
If someone hangs up after booking only a home inspection...
...did they make that decision because they understood all of their options?
Or because nobody explained them?
Those are two very different outcomes.
Our job isn't to make the decision.
Our job is to make sure they have enough information to make a good one.
